Proportion, Incarnation and Iván, the Terrible. A Conversation with Jean Robert
Abstract
Jean Robert is an architect. He was born in Switzerland, in 1937. He emigrated to Mexico in 1972, where he became a close friend and disciple of the philosopher, historian and theologian Iván Illich. His career as an architect began in his country of origin, where he built banks. He ended up producing dry toilets and living in Cuernavaca, the city where Illich and his collaborators placed the CIDOC - International Committee for Documentation. After several years without using motor cars, and rather walking, he has published several books: The treason of Opulence (La trahison de l’opulence, in collaboration with Jean-Pierre Dupuy, Paris, Presses Universitaires de France, 1976), The Time We are Stolen. Against the Cronofag Society (Le temps qu’on nous vole. Contre la société chronophage, Paris, Seuil, 1980) and, with Majid Rahnema, he wrote The Potency of Poor (La puissance des pauvres, Actes Sud, 2008).He has devoted to studying and teaching the consequences of Modernity in the subjective identities through an analysis of transportation and the notions of space and urbanism. A concept which is key to his philosophy is "proportion", rooted in Iván Illich's thought, as well as in the different social, philosophical, historical and theological traditions which Illich recreate. This conversation, which took place in August 2012 and that is now being published for the first time, is centered in the philosophical resonance of the philosophical ideas "body" and "embodiment", language, the notion of victim and the happening of "Incarnation".References
