Abstract

One of the most interesting theses of Aristotle’s ethical and political writings is that the ruler —the one who legislates — is also the best educator of the citizens. Through the laws, he regulates the way of living and the education of all the citizens, especially of the youngest. However, it is not always easy to know how this is done, beyond coercive power. Through the application of universal norms, as in science? By principle discovered in practice, as in art? Or maybe because of certain generic dispositions, which are later helped by other immediate and concrete educational agents, such as parents and friends?
