The Search for Truth in the Religion Class: A discussion of Michael Hand’s Possibility of Truth Case
Abstract
This article analyzes the possibility of truth case proposed by Michael Hand as the unique justification for religion classes in secular public schools. The possibility of truth case argues that Religious Education is only legitimized if it is based on examining the truth or falsifiability of religious propositions. The article questions and reformulates this position from the Roberta De Monticelli’s phenomenological arguments, concluding that, although it is necessary to include the truth-telling dimension in the study of religion in schools, the possibility of truth case runs the risk of reducing religion to mere propositions, ignoring its experiential dimension and its axiological source.References
